WHAT IS IT? The bottom board serves as the floor of the hive, supports all the weight of the boxes and frames on top of it. On each bottom board, there is a single entrance to the hive the bees use to come and go from the hive. The bottom board is also the place most beekeepers place their bee feeders. The screen on the bottom of the bottom board serves as a false floor that bees cannot get through, but debris and air can pass through easily.
CYPRESS WOOD: The bottom board is closest to the ground so is often the most susceptible to rot. This is one area where our rot-resistant cypress wood shines, standing up to the elements. Changing out a rotten bottom board is not fun and our bottom boards ensure you won't have to do that.
BEETLE OIL PAN COMPATIBLE: Our bottom board is designed to work perfectly with oursmall hive beetle traythat seals completely, keeping bees out of the oil or diatomaceous earth in the pan. We redesigned our bottom boards to work perfectly with our under-hive oil trap.
SOLID VS SCREENED: The screened bottom board has become very popular in the last decade as a way to help reduce the population of varroa mites. This is the main reason for its popularity and the reason we include it in our kits by default. The solid bottom board does not have a screen and because of its solid floor, provides more insulation during cold months. Both options work great and have been used for decades.
FULLY ASSEMBLED: Our bottom boards are completely assembled with glue, staples, and nails so you don't have to worry about it.
CORRUGATED BOARD: Our screened bottom boards also have a small rail underneath the screen that a corrugated board can rest. This corrugated board allows beekeepers to "close" the screen, reducing any drafts.
PRIMED AND PAINTED: Our cypress wood doesn't need to be painted, but it does extend the life of the wood even longer. If you'd like us to prime and paint your bottom board, you can choose this option.
